UK Corporate Reporting Reform Could Expand iXBRL Tagging and Assurance

UK corporate reporting reform

The UK government has opened a consultation on modernising corporate reporting, with digital and structured reporting forming an important part of the proposed reforms.

Published on 7 September 2026, the consultation examines how the UK corporate reporting framework could be simplified and modernised while making greater use of digital reporting and communications. The consultation is open until 30 November 2026.

For organisations preparing UK digital and iXBRL reporting, several proposals are particularly relevant.

More of the annual report could be digitally tagged

The consultation considers whether structured tagging should gradually extend across more of the annual report, rather than being concentrated primarily within financial statements.

This comes as the UK is already moving toward a more software-driven filing environment, increasing the importance of structured, machine-readable corporate information.

For reporting teams, broader tagging could mean that XBRL preparation becomes more closely integrated with the annual reporting process rather than remaining an activity completed toward the end of the filing cycle.

FRC could gain statutory powers over digital reporting standards

The proposals also consider giving the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) statutory authority to establish technical standards for electronic corporate reporting, including the taxonomies used for digital tagging.

If adopted, this could place greater emphasis on managing taxonomy changes, selecting the appropriate taxonomy version and ensuring that electronically formatted reports comply with the applicable technical requirements.

Directors could approve electronic formatting

Digital reporting could also become more closely connected with corporate governance.

The consultation proposes that directors could approve the electronic formatting of accounts when approving the accounts themselves, rather than digital formatting being treated primarily as a later filing-stage activity.

This would bring structured reporting further into the preparation, review and approval process.

Auditors could provide assurance over digital tagging

Another significant proposal concerns assurance.

The consultation considers whether auditors should report on whether electronically formatted reports have been correctly tagged against the applicable taxonomy.

If introduced, this would place additional focus on tagging accuracy, validation and review before submission.

Automated preparation and validation capabilities within platforms such as Integix can help reporting teams manage these activities through a more controlled digital reporting workflow.

Where does AI fit into structured reporting?

The consultation also considers the relationship between artificial intelligence and structured data.

It notes that current AI systems can analyse annual reports more accurately when information has been digitally tagged, while also asking whether advances in AI and data-mining technologies could eventually reduce reliance on structured tagging.

The discussion highlights an important issue for the future of digital reporting: AI can help automate reporting activities, but XBRL and iXBRL provide information that is structured and machine-readable at source.

What should UK reporting teams monitor?

The proposals remain under consultation and do not introduce immediate new filing requirements.

However, reporting teams should monitor developments around:

1.expanded XBRL and iXBRL tagging;
2.FRC electronic reporting and taxonomy standards;
3.director responsibility for electronic formatting;
4.auditor assurance over digital tagging; and
5.the role of AI within structured corporate reporting.

The consultation remains open until 30 November 2026.

How Ez-XBRL supports UK digital reporting

Ez-XBRL has been providing solutions to UK corporate entities since 2011, when HMRC introduced mandatory Inline XBRL filing requirements. Its UK reporting solutions combine structured reporting technology with flexible delivery models to support different reporting needs.

Agentic AI-powered Integix supports XBRL and iXBRL preparation, tagging, automation and validation, while XOR provides a controlled environment for review, collaboration, validation and approvals.

Reporting teams can work with Ez-XBRL through three engagement models:

1.Self-Service, for organisations that want to manage preparation and review internally;
2.Managed Services, where Ez-XBRL specialists support the preparation, tagging, validation and reporting process; or
3.Hybrid model, where responsibilities are shared between the internal reporting team and Ez-XBRL specialists.

This flexibility allows organisations to choose the level of technology, internal control and expert support that best fits their reporting process while moving toward reviewed, validated and filing-ready structured reports.
