Table Constraints Public Working Draft Released

May 25, 2024 The Table Constraints specification was published this week as a public working draft. This set of specialised extensions to the xBRL-CSV standard promises to materially enhance validation checks while maintaining backward compatibility. The newly released specification introduces additional validation instructions that integrate seamlessly within xBRL-CSV metadata files. These instructions will enhance the ability of processors to validate CSV files efficiently before loading an XBRL taxonomy and constructing an Open Information Model (OIM) report. Notably, the specification is designed to enable streaming and parallelisation, allowing most checks to be performed using constant memory on a single row at a time. However, it also allows processors the flexibility to load entire CSV files into memory or transfer them to persistent storage if needed. This draft specification supports the Open Information Model (OIM) and aligns with the broader objectives of XBRL International to provide a syntax-independent model for XBRL data. The OIM facilitates the reliable transformation of XBRL data into various representations, enhancing its utility and accessibility across different platforms and use cases. The publication of the Table Constraints specification marks further evolution of the xBRL-CSV standard and was created in response to industry and regulatory requirements to accelerate validation as increased granularity starts to become a reality, especially in bank and insurance reporting. By offering new ways to speed up validation capabilities, it aims to streamline the process of working with XBRL data, making it more accessible and easier to manage for users worldwide.
