EDGAR 26.3 Ends Acceptance of 2024 XBRL Taxonomies

September 2026

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) upgraded EDGAR to Release 26.3 on September 14, 2026, bringing several changes to the filing system, including an important update for XBRL filers.

Effective from the September 14, 2026 EDGAR 26.3 release, the 2024 versions of a range of XBRL taxonomies are no longer accepted in the EDGAR system.

This means reporting teams submitting SEC filings should verify that their filing packages use taxonomy versions currently supported by EDGAR before submission.

Which 2024 XBRL Taxonomies Are No Longer Accepted?

The affected 2024 taxonomy versions include:

Taxonomy Abbreviation
U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles US-GAAP
International Financial Reporting Standards IFRS
SEC Reporting Taxonomy SRT
Document and Entity Information DEI
Cybersecurity Disclosure CYD
Executive Compensation Disclosure ECD
Filing Fee Disclosure FFD
Closed-End Fund CEF
Open-End Fund OEF
Fund FND
Resource Extraction Payments RXP
Security-Based Swap SBS
Variable Insurance Product VIP

The SEC has also stopped accepting the 2024 versions of supporting taxonomies including COUNTRY, CURRENCY, EXCH, NAICS, SIC, SNJ, SRO, and STPR.

Certain 2024 interim taxonomy releases are also no longer accepted.

The SEC maintains a complete list of taxonomies currently supported by EDGAR on its Standard Taxonomies page.

For IFRS filers, the SEC notes that the 2025 International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) taxonomy remains the current version for the 2026 reporting period, based on guidance from the IFRS Foundation.

What Should SEC Filers Check?

The change is particularly important for recurring filings where taxonomy references and prior-period tagging may have been carried forward into the next reporting cycle.

Before submission, reporting teams should check:

1.Whether the filing uses an EDGAR-supported taxonomy version
2.Whether taxonomy components within the filing are compatible
3.Whether prior-period tags remain appropriate after the taxonomy update
4.Whether validation identifies issues introduced during the taxonomy transition
5.Whether the final filing package meets current EDGAR requirements

The SEC strongly encourages companies to use the most recent supported taxonomy releases to take advantage of updated tags associated with accounting standards, disclosure requirements, and other improvements.

EDGAR 26.3 Also Adds the 2026q3 Fund Taxonomy

EDGAR 26.3 now supports the 2026q3 Fund (FND) taxonomy.

The new version includes concepts designed to distinguish between portfolios within unit investment trusts registered on Forms N-8B-2 and S-6.

More details about the overall system release are available in the SEC’s EDGAR Release 26.3 announcement.

Preparing for the Taxonomy Transition with Ez-XBRL

For SEC filers, the practical issue is not simply replacing one taxonomy version with another. Teams also need to determine whether the transition affects existing tags, validation results, or reporting work carried forward from the previous filing.

With Agentic AI-powered Integix, reporting teams can reuse approved XBRL work while updating the filing for the currently supported taxonomy. Automation helps reduce repetitive preparation, while teams can focus review on tagging changes, validation issues, and exceptions that require attention before submission.

This helps teams:

1.Retain approved work that remains applicable
2.Review tagging affected by the taxonomy transition
3.Run validation as the filing is updated
4.Route exceptions or changed tagging decisions for review
5.Keep changes and review decisions traceable through to filing-ready output

Rather than rebuilding the filing from the beginning, teams can concentrate on the areas affected by the taxonomy transition while maintaining control through preparation, validation, and final review.

Staying Ready for the Next SEC Filing

EDGAR releases and taxonomy updates can directly affect whether an XBRL filing passes validation and can be successfully submitted.

With the 2024 taxonomy versions now removed from EDGAR acceptance, reporting teams should verify the taxonomy versions used in their next filing early in the reporting cycle and resolve any resulting tagging or validation changes before final submission.
